All roads at 20th Street East and Port of Tacoma Road are open to traffic, following a cleanup project that began March 6.

The cleanup project closed a portion of 20th Street East and Port of Tacoma Road and blocked access to I-5 from 20th. The project's purpose was to remove the last of the contaminated soil following a truck accident in 2016 that spilled about 7,500 gallons of fuel after the truck overturned while entering I-5. Most of the contaminated dirt was removed right after the accident, but there was still a small amount left underneath the road that needed a permanent solution. The project was paid for by the insurance company representing the truck driver.

The soil is now safely gone. The road has been repaved and a new culvert has been installed.
