One of the final pieces of work for WSDOT’s SR 99 Connections Project is reopening South Atlantic Street underneath the SR 99 overpass. WSDOT developed a plan for the work in coordination with the Port of Seattle and are implementing it this week. This work begins March 4, and its traffic impacts end at 5 a.m. Monday, March 11. Below is a step-by-step overview of the work:
- March 4: Contractor Scarsella Brothers has closed the far right turn lane of the southbound leg of the South Atlantic Street overpass. Crews are preparing a concrete pour near the intersection of South Atlantic Street and Colorado Avenue South. One southbound lane on the overpass remains open, as does the northbound lane.
- Thursday morning, 3/7: When the concrete reaches sufficient cure strength, we will open a single, eastbound lane of South Atlantic Street from Alaskan Way South and under the SR 99 overpass.
- 9 p.m. Thursday, 3/7: We close both directions of the South Atlantic Street overpass. Port trucks leaving Terminal 46 will be able to go straight on South Atlantic Street, or turn left or right onto Alaskan Way South. In-bound interstate trucks to Terminal 46 will be detoured south to S. Hanford Street to approach the terminal via northbound East Marginal Way.
- Thursday night 3/7 – Friday morning 3/8: Scarsella grinds the roadway, preps and pours a second concrete pour. We are using a rapid-strength concrete to reduce the duration of the closure.
- 5 a.m. Monday, 3/11: Closures end. The South Atlantic Street overpass reopens, as does South Atlantic Street in both directions underneath SR 99.
