Starting as early as July 22 through Aug. 19, design-build contractor Atkinson Construction will put temporary changes in place around the northbound I-5 exit to Portland Avenue:
- The Portland Avenue exit will move west about a quarter of a mile toward I-705.
- One lane of the I-705 on-ramp to northbound I-5 and the entire SR 7 on-ramp to northbound I-5 will close. During the closure, drivers coming from SR 7 will detour using I-705 to SR 509 and back to northbound I-5 using East Portland Avenue.

To do this work, some important changes are underway for southbound I-5 in Fife and Tacoma that drivers need to be aware of. This video describes what lanes travelers need to be in so they can reach their destinations.
This project is the final funded HOV project that builds a new southbound I-5 bridge across the Puyallup River and rebuilds the L Street overpass, and widens I-5 to install and complete the HOV system on I-5 in Tacoma. A temporary regulatory speed limit reduction to 50 mph on I-5 is in place through the duration of construction. The speed limit reduction for this project on northbound I-5 begins at milepost 133.06 and continues to milepost 136.19. The speed limit reduction on southbound I-5 begins at milepost 136.67 and continues to milepost 133.86.
