Message from the City of Seattle Department of Transportation:
There’s a new temporary southbound Freight and Transit Lane on Alaskan Way between S Main and S King streets. It stretches two blocks and keeps people and goods moving during #realign99. Freight and transit lanes prioritize buses and trucks in congested locations and can reduce the impact of constriction points.
The lane reduces congestion for all travelers and supports freight movement by allowing large vehicles to move out of general traffic and over the “little h” structure to access Port of Seattle terminals, Harbor Island, SODO and the Duwamish industrial areas more easily. Over the next few weeks, we’ll observe operations to understand its effectiveness and evaluate if the treatment makes sense to use in other locations. Doing so also aligns with Seattle’s Freight Master Plan’s priority to evaluate a pilot Truck Only Lane.
