We have seen changes in truck volumes at several of our container terminals in recent days. These changes are affecting local traffic. Here is the latest update on what the NWSA and our partners are doing to address the situation.
What is happening at Terminal 18?
We are working closely with SSA—the terminal operator at T-18— to help minimize truck backups at its gates. Specifically:
- SSA is planning to launch its pre-arrival system in early June.
- SSA is now stacking containers higher on terminal. This creates additional space for trucks and cargo handling equipment to maneuver on the terminal, thereby improving turn-times.
- SSA is hiring additional staff to provide more terminal support functions.
- SSA is staggering lunches and breaks to provide more consistent service throughout the course of the day.
This is in addition to previously announced steps by SSA to expand gate hours.
What is happening at Husky Terminal?
To address congestion at Husky Terminal in Tacoma, we opened “Lot F” on Port of Tacoma Road to serve as an off-dock queuing facility for trucks dispatched to the terminal. The use of this lot is expected to reduce truck queuing that might occur on Thorne Road.
This is in addition to previously announced steps by Husky expand gate hours and the NWSA to improve signal timing on 11th Street.
